Stop running back to the potty and get on with your life!
A lot of my clients with low muscle tone or hypermobility have to run BACK to the toilet to pee again shortly after their first visit. They are surprised at how quickly this happens. Some of them don’t make it in time. They could pee 10 times a day. That is a lot of time in the bathroom.
So they see a doctor. They go through painful bladder testing, but the tests come back negative. In most cases, my clients have also tried strengthening their core, they have tried timing their hydration…they have tried a lot of things.
They need to do a “double void”.
What is it, and why does it work so well?
When you don’t fully empty your bladder due to abdominal tone issues, you can shake things up a bit. Make it easier for your bladder to register fullness and contract well, so that it empties completely. Sometimes you need to activate your pelvic floor and relax a bit more. This will do it for a lot of kids and adults.
It works because it is simple, fast, isn’t painful or difficult to do in any situation. Kids can do it and grannies can do it.
- Empty your bladder by relaxing. Nothing can work if you are tensing your pelvic floor.
- Stand up if you were sitting to urinate.
- Take a deep breath and let it out. Make sure that you did a diaphragmatic breath. You want to alter the forces on your lower abdomen.
- Lean and twist a bit to each side a few times.
- Bend forward a bit, then a bit backward. This isn’t the Olympics; no straining involved.
- Try to pee a second time.
