The Best Electric Shaver for Your Special Needs Son

My popular post, The Easiest Manual Razor to Teach Your Special Needs Son to Shave , remains relevant for parents looking to begin teaching their son to shave.  This lightweight manual razor is quiet and has a flexible head.  Those reduce anxiety and razor injuries.  Both deter guys from using a razor at all.

But…

The time will come when you want more independence from your young man.  He may also want to be more independent.  The next step in learning to shave is usually a more powerful electric razor.  But which one makes your life (and theirs) easier?

There is one.

The Braun Series 9cc is an expensive choice.  Full stop.  But what you get is worth every penny.  There is little competition for the right razor in the special needs community.  We want independence, but not at the price of skin irritation or infection.  Razors have to be sharp enough, clean enough, and tolerant enough with common motor and cognitive challenges.

This is the shaver series that delivers on all fronts:

  1. It gives a very close, but not too close, shave.  The razors that shave extremely close have to be used with more precision.  The special needs man often is not able to monitor their actions with that level of precision.
  2. It is forgiving on sensitive skin and with less-than-gentle use.  Many guys in this community press too hard or go over the same patches of skin multiple times.  With other shavers, this can lead to skin irritation.  The Braun model forgives those actions better than its peers.
  3. The “clean and charge” station is worth every penny.  The “cc” indicates that those models come with the clean and charge station.  You want your son to be able to complete shaving, wash and lotion his face, and get the razor clean for the next shave.  With manual razors, that is a challenge at best and a safety risk at worst.  The most  you will have to do with the Braun is cap the container between shaves to slow evaporation of the alcohol-based solution.  But you won’t have to mix it, and you won’t have to do much with the shaving head before docking it.  The alcohol prevents mold formation and is the most hygienic choice for a self-cleaning razor.  The station also lubricates the shaving head automatically, leaving it ready for use after drying.
