Teaching Special Needs Kids How to Write? I Wrote a Handout Pack for YOU!

My handout packs for pre-writing and handwriting with neurotypical kids have been a big success; lots of therapists, teachers, and parents have learned things that took me decades of professional experience and continuing education to master!

NOW…it is time for children with special needs to get their own handout pack!

I started with an expanded section on handwriting with the ASD child.  So many autistic kids aren’t getting the teaching and therapy they need.  When parents and teachers don’t realize how essential handwriting is to build literacy and communication skills, valuable time is lost.  An occupational therapist that brings to best strategies to the table (or the desk!) can be pivotal in building language skills.  It is so important to me that all kids, including the kids destined to use screens for most of their instruction, get good handwriting instruction and the best adaptations from the start.

Wait-and-see works for plants.  It doesn’t work for kids!

I believe that our special needs kids deserve the BEST materials, the BEST training, and the BEST adaptations to allow them to succeed.  And I explain what those are in detail.

And I did not forget the medically challenged child.  These kids are struggling but they tend to have 504 plans in the US, not always an IEP.  This sounds good, but it doesn’t hold the team accountable enough for me.  The child with Long COVID, the child with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and the child with hand deformity all need the best assistance the school system can offer.  But if their issues aren’t understood, that won’t happen.  So I have a bunch of handouts on handwriting support for the child with chronic illness or a rare condition.
