“The Young Gifted Child: A Quick Reference Guide for Parents” Has Finally Arrived!

Parents of Young Gifted Children:  This is the Information You Have Been Searching For!

Young gifted kids are some of the most interesting kids I see all year.

Really.  Gifted kids are wonderful.  They are always surprising me.  They are the people who will improve our world.

I am working with a young gifted child right now.  He is brilliant.  But he is making mornings in his home a nightmare.  One reason is that he isn’t getting recognized as having “special needs”. Not deficits.  Needs.  His parents need better support as well, and they aren’t getting much.  So I wrote a book!

Some of these kids (and their exhausted parents!) need more understanding and support than the severely developmentally delayed kids I treat.  I believe that when a child tests more than 2 standard deviations from the mean on a standardized test, they qualify as “special needs”.  Even when they are on the opposite side of the bell curve than the rest of the kids I treat. That doesn’t mean that it is easy to raise them.  It is often the opposite.

Gifted kids have unique needs.  Their parents deserve more information about how to support them and help them learn about being gifted.

It comes with many challenges:

  • Gifted kids can struggle to fit in.  They think differently about themselves, the world, and how to navigate life.  We need to support them to teach them how to live in a world that both admires them and doesn’t understand them while empowering them.  They know they are different.  Saying that difference is OK doesn’t help them.  They need practical strategies for the playground.
  • The parents of gifted kids need help too.  These kids are a lot.  A lot of work, a lot of energy, and a lot of contradictions.  It can all make sense, but they need information.  Just not a 200 page book that they don’t have time to read.  The parent of a gifted kid doesn’t know when they will find the time to shower some days!
  • Gifted kids can have sensory processing differences, and physical differences directly related to their giftedness.  These aren’t deficits.  They are only problems when they aren’t understood and managed well.
  • The twice exceptional child (2e) really needs to be understood.  These kids are gifted in some ways, and have issues in some other areas.  Knowing how to manage the education and parenting of the 2e child is an art form.

I created a short ebook that is modeled on my professional handout packs for therapists sold on Your Therapy Source.  Every page can be an instant handout.  Each page is filled with only the details that are needed.  No footnotes, no long descriptions of case studies and reviews of recent research. The information is out there, and it is needed.  But not by a parent trying to get their non-napping preschooler from getting kicked out of school!  Those parents need my book.

I wrote it in the most accessible format that I know, and I wrote it for parents, not therapists or teachers.  We love data, but parents are trying to make today good.  They want ideas.  They want to see their kid, their lives, on the page.
